Dance Choreography

2nd-3rd grade

1st Place Ashlyn Nash

Title: Save the Ocean

Artist Statement: I have always the loved the ocean. I want to change the world by protecting the animals in the ocean. I choreographed this dance, in it you can see a dolphin leaping, a jelly fish, a shark swimming, a fish and how sometimes the waves are calm and peaceful and other times they are loud and rough. Someday I want to be a marine biologist that will help ocean animals, but I can help save them now by recycling, cleaning up trash so it doesn’t end up in the ocean and using less plastic.

4th-6th grade

1st Place Annie Iverson

Title: “She Is Perfect To Me”

Artist Statement: I can change the world by showing it is very important that we treat others with love and kindness. My little sister Elise has a gene mutation. She doesn’t talk, walk, or do the things I enjoy doing every day. I love my sister and I know that she would want to share with everyone that it doesn’t matter what their differences are, we should always treat others with kindness and love. Often we can’t see the beauty of difference. I can change the world by expressing through dance the beauty I see in my sister Elsie and accepting her as she is.

Additional Comments: At the beginning of my dance I choreographed all the things I enjoy doing. Walking, running, swinging, dancing, jumping, swimming, painting and reading. When Elsie comes on stage I have to make a decision whether I accept her or continue to do the things I enjoy doing. It is a struggle sometimes to know how to include someone who can’t do all that I can do. As I accept her I discover I can still do all the things I enjoy doing and I become more complete with her.

2nd Place Ruth Iverson

Title: “You & Me”

Artist Statement: We can change the world by working together. I choreographed this dance to show how working together can move mountains. Working with my sister on this dance was not always easy. Sharing ideas on what we each thought was best, sometimes we didn’t always agree with each other. One time I didn’t want to keep working on the dance. After finishing the dance I realized that working together was more fun than doing it all by myself.

Additional Comments: As I choreographed my dance I picked the song that says Me & You make those mountains move. As my sister and I hold hands we run to move the mountain together. Anything is possible when we work together!
