Entries will be displayed at the school during the course of the week so that they can be enjoyed by our students and community.

Prizes will be awarded to as many participants as possible as well as individual artistic feedback from judges skilled in the artistic categories.

Grade Divisions

  • Primary K-1st
  • Junior 2nd-3rd
  • Senior 4th-6th

Dance Choreography

Choreography is the art of creating movement.

Consider the following types of dance among your options when deciding on your project:

  • Ballet
  • Contemporary
  • Hip Hop
  • Jazz
  • Tap
  • Folk Dance
  • Cultural Dance
  • Religious Dance
  • Dance Ensembles (color guard, etc.)
  • Ice Skating/Dancing
  • Gymnastics-floor routine

Also consider use of:

  • background song(s)
  • props
  • location

to show a clear relation of the dance choreography to the theme.

The choreographer (student submitting entry) may be the performer or one of the people performing, but he or she does not have to perform in the entry.

All choreography must be done solely by the student who is submitting the entry.

Film Production

Consider the following styles to portray your original work:

  • Animation: Demonstrates motion by sequencing still objects or using computer- generated graphics.
  • Narrative: Tells a fictional story developed by the student.
  • Documentary: Presents facts and information.
  • Experimental: Explores movement, light, and montage.
  • Multimedia: Uses a combination of different contents (text, audio, still images, animation, etc.)

Films are limited to a maximum of 5 minutes.

All filming, screenwriting, directing, and editing must be done by the student producer. All entries must contain only original student produced ideas/images and/or video footage. The student must be in control of the camera at all times, including when using a tripod, selfie stick, drone, or other film capturing devices.

Literature

The art of writing. The famous author C.S. Lewis said, “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it.”

Consider the following literary styles to portray your original work of fiction or nonfiction:

  • Prose
  • Poetry
  • Drama
  • Reflective essay
  • Narrative
  • Short story

Illustrated entries with pictures drawn by the student author are acceptable; however, only the words are judged. The author (student submitting entry) is a person who expresses his or her own thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Authors submit a single literary work (please do not submit a collection of poems or stories). The entry may be handwritten or typed, and should use grade-appropriate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Music Composition

The composer (student submitting entry) is a person who expresses his/her own thoughts and ideas through the use of sound (with or without lyrics). The student composer may submit an entry performed by an individual or group and/or make use of a sound library generated performance of a piece of music which they composed. Student composers are not required to perform their compositions.

Consider the following musical styles and instruments to portray your original composition:

  • A Cappella
  • Blues
  • Choral
  • Country
  • Electronic
  • Hip Hop
  • Jazz
  • Latin
  • Musical
  • Orchestral
  • Pop
  • R&B
  • Religious
  • Rock
  • Symphonic/Concert Band
  • Traditional

All instruments, sounds, styles, and combinations are accepted. Software may be used to produce an audio recording that does not include commercially pre-programmed imported MIDI or other source files. Entries containing algorithmic composition techniques are not accepted.

The composing of the music must be done by the student alone.

Photography

Submit a single print.

Consider use of:

  • objects
  • lighting
  • location

to show a clear relation of the photo to the theme.

An explanation of the photography process/form might be a useful addition to the artist statement. Whether an entry displays use of technologies or a simple approach, it will be judged primarily on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision to portray the theme, originality, and creativity.

Visual Arts – 2D

Ideas for this category include:

  • drawings
  • collages (maybe cutouts from magazines or other sources)
  • photographic collages (multiple photos cut/pasted)
  • computer-generated image
  • 2D designs or architecture
  • flat metal etching/punch work, painting
  • print making

If it could be hung on a wall to display it is 2D, even if it contains some 3D elements. Remember to connect your art to the theme in your Artist statement.

Visual Arts – 3D

Examples include:

  • Sculptures (made of clay, wood, stone, wire etc.)
  • ceramics
  • crafts
  • dioramas
  • fiber work (fabrics, things like rugs, quilts, etc.)
  • jewelry
  • kites
  • metal etching/punch work
  • carpentry
  • mobiles
  • wind chimes

Submission Requirements and Guidelines:

  • Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted.
  • Whether an entry displays formal technique or a simple approach, it will be judged primarily on how well the student uses artistic vision to portray the theme, originality, and creativity.
  • Each entry must be the original work of one student only. Parents or others may give guidance but ALL work on the project must be the student alone.
  • An explanation of the storyline and/or the significance of the entries style might be a useful addition to the artist statement.
  • Photography prints must be no smaller than 3×5 inches and no larger than 11×14 inches
  • Music Composition should have an Audio file only (no video). Accepted audio file formats include MP3, M4A, WAV. You can also submit a musical score (sheet music) in pdf if desired.
  • Film and Dance will require video files. The best way to submit these is to upload it to YouTube as an “unlisted” video and share the link (it can also be uploaded and shared from google drive).
  • Email all video/audio entries (or links) to paws4wasatch@gmail.com with the student’s name, category, artist statement and ID number included in the email.

(Note: Many of the rules and explanations given here, as well as logos, are directly taken from the National Reflections website. The purpose for this is to allow our talented Wasatch youth the opportunity to become familiar with the competition format of this nationally recognized PTA sponsored competition. As a PTO Wasatch’s Art Expressions is not part of the Reflections, which allows us more flexibility in judging and content, but at the same time, we recognize the strengths of this program and want our students to be prepared to excel in it in the future as they advance to middle and high school and wish them the best of luck.)
